The Ladder

When I see a ladder on the street, my natural inclination is to push it over. I never do; I would feel too guilty if I actually hurt someone. We can't control what goes on inside our heads, though, any more than we can control our dreams.

I had a dream the other day where I was tied to a ladder and locked in a room away from everyone. My captor taunted me for a while before he applied tape over my mouth and secured my head to one of the steps with rope. I couldn't move my head and the leg on which I stood was getting shaky. Instead of pushing me (and the ladder) over, which would have alleviated my strain, he walked around me as we often walk around people on ladders, and he left me there alone...

It made me reconsider the notion of pushing ladders as an act of cruelty. In this case, not pushing the ladder over was much crueler of an act. It's all in the context. In our dreams and in our inclinations we do not possess this control...
